Duncan Cooper

CMIOSH, SIIRSM, DipSM, CMaPS, MInstRE

Managing Director

Duncan is the Managing Director and Owner of Callsafe Services. Originally starting working life in the Royal Engineers involved in a variety of construction projects around the world, Duncan has been with Callsafe since 2003 as a consultant, trainer, principal designer, director and over the last few years, Operations Director. He is highly regarded by the clients he works with and has been recognised with several project awards over the years with Callsafe. CDM is a particular specialism of Duncan, helping to educate and guide clients, designers, and contractors in a professional but pragmatic way to achieve results. Outside of work, Duncan is a bit of a fitness nut competing in numerous triathlons including full Ironman distance events, several marathons and is also a keen scuba diver.

John Ellis

BSc (Civ Eng), CMIOSH, CMaPS

Consultancy Workstream Manager

John Ellis started his career as a Site Engineer for a Principal Contractor before becoming a Contracts Manager for a specialist precast concrete contractor. He has also been an HM Inspector of Health & Safety within the HSE’s construction division and a general health & safety practitioner working for an insurance company within their risk management division, specialising in construction work but also covering the full industry spectrum including manufacturing, haulage, retail, fire safety, electrical, HVAC and services. John joined the Callsafe team in 2017 where he is currently the Principal Designer for Defra Facility Management projects in the north of England, including a variety of projects from new-build construction, refurbishment and demolition. John also delivers CDM training nationally and provides health & safety consultancy services to a number of organisations. John was promoted to Consultancy Workstream Manager in September 2022. Outside of work, John enjoys gardening, going to the gym, DIY, and playing snooker.

Anthony Evans

TechIOSH, IMaPs

Principal Designer & CDM Advisor

Anthony Evans started out as a safety professional in the construction industry in 2002, working at the time with a contractor on multiple projects within the London Underground and Network Rail environments. Anthony commenced delivery of CDM (Construction Design & Management) related projects in 2006. Anthony’s skills focus on developing client and designer relationships to understand their health and safety liabilities within the construction industry, and their understanding of their duties under the CDM Regulations. Anthony’s primary experience is predominantly Environment Agency construction projects, rail, mixed use and commercial, social housing and environmental in the role Principal Designer and CDM consultant. Anthony joined Callsafe in April 2016 where he has been Principal Designer for Environment Agency projects, ranging from coastal and river flood defence works to river lock and harbour refurbishment works. Outside of works Anthony enjoys sea kayaking, sea fishing, walking the coast path all in the South West of the UK local to where he lives. He also supports Arsenal Football Club and England Cricket.

Graham Bell

Grad IOSH, Dip NEBOSH

Principal Designer & CDM Advisor & Trainer

Graham joined Callsafe in September 2020. He has had a varied career, having started as a Plumbing & Heating Engineer in 1988 and holding a number of management positions within Music Promotions, Sales and Recruitment throughout the 90’s. Graham started his career in health and safety as a Unite Union Health, Safety & Training Representative in 2008 while working for an International utility pipeline manufacturer and installation company. Having sparked his passion for compliance, Graham quickly proceeded to educate himself through a number of HSEQ &Training qualifications, gaining his NEBOSH Diploma and Grad IOSH status in 2013. Graham has held a number of HSEQ & Training Management positions within the UK and Europe, predominately for Principal Contractors within the commercial build, power, chemical and pharma industries. Prior to starting at Callsafe Services Graham was the HS&E Manager for a PC and Pre-Assembly Module manufacturing company operating thought the UK, reporting to the board and responsible for the management of the HS&E Dept. and its Advisors. Outside of work Graham’s passions include music, cooking and traveling.

Richard Haines

Principal Designer & Health & Safety Consultant & Trainer

Richard Haines joined the Callsafe team firstly on a contract basis on EA projects in February 2019 and then as a full time Health and Safety Consultant in January 2021. Richard is a Panel Principal Designer and CDM Advisor for Environment Agency working on the design and construction of various Civil Engineering projects in the Eastern Hub. Richard started his career as a Site Engineer for G Maunsell and Partners on various major Highways projects in the Eastern Region of Highways Agency. He was involved in the construction of A120 Colchester Eastern Bypass in Essex and later in the design, Public Inquiry and subsequent construction of A11 Thetford Bypass in Norfolk. Richard progressed to become a Chartered Engineer, working for Aecom where he was promoted to Principal Engineer and later Associate Director, leading teams on Highways, Rail and Coastal and Ports projects including the London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC) Jubilee Line Extension and London Gateway Port. Richard is active on the Health and Safety Register working group of the Institution of Civil Engineers, attending regular meetings in Westminster. Outside of work Richard enjoys DIY, working on cars and attending Premier League football matches in London. Richard also enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Barry Smith

TechIOSH AMaPS NEBOSH Construction, General & Fire Safety

Principal Designer & Health & Safety Consultant

Barry Smith joined Callsafe in June 2022 and primarily works as a Principal Designer and CDM advisor on various Environment Agency Flood Defence projects. He has varied experience in the delivery of CDM and H&S services in the construction sector. He has been involved in construction Health and Safety for several years with previous experience in the building industry. This has involved work representing client and contractor roles in private and commercial developments, education, local authorities, housing associations, asbestos management and Fire Safety. Outside of work, Barry enjoys playing “Aunt Sally”, a pub game only played in Oxfordshire, and badminton with a group of friends.

Lesley Gill

BEng CEng CMICE CMIOSH

Principal Designer & Health & Safety Consultant

Lesley started her career on site with a national contractor working on some major civils projects including Docklands Light Railway, Coryton Oil Refinery Isomerisation Project, Hinkley Point and Maidenhead sewage treatment extension works. A year with a global leading consultant gave design experience supporting the development of piled raft design analysis, before achieving Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers at a relatively early stage in her career. Subsequently, a period working for a Severn Trent design agency, and then for 18 years a design/project management role with another multinational consultancy. During this period, she championed Health and Safety, and CDM within the Midlands undertaking NEBOSH training to become a Chartered Member of IOSH, concentrating full-time on health and safety within the construction industry. Part of the ICE Health and Safety Advanced Register and Incorporated member of APS. Working on some prestigious national projects for major clients, she led the PS/CDM-C/now PD role. Her focus was on communication and cooperation between team members, design reviews, training and supporting personnel development within teams. Outside of work, Lesley has recently completed a self-build house with her husband, and enjoys growing vegetables, painting, upholstery and craft work. She has also supported young people completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, including their expeditions, within scouting over an 18 year period of volunteering.

Gemma Esprey

Administration Manager

Gemma joined Callsafe in March 2005 first as an Administrative Assistant and was promoted to Senior Office Administrator in December 2009, and then became Administration Manager in 2021. Her main role within the company is to organise and co-ordinate training courses and events, which encapsulates a wide range of administrative tasks and responsibilities, including maintaining the company diary, preparing quotes and invoices, liaising with consultants and clients to set up courses and perform all post-course administration. Gemma also handles the social media for the company and works with other companies to assist with marketing and the Callsafe website. Gemma has a BSc in Psychology and in 2019 became Callsafe’s Mental Health First Aider. In her spare time, Gemma enjoys knitting, sewing, reading, gardening and walking the dog.

Sarah Macleman

Bookeeper

Sarah Macleman joined Callsafe in February 2008 and became responsible for all aspects of the Accounts, including Payroll. She has worked in Finance since 1996 and has qualifications in ICB Payroll and AAT Accounting. In her spare time she enjoys running – regularly taking part in races from 5k to marathons, reading, and spending time with her family.

Michelle Symcox

Workstream PA & Administrator

Michelle joined Callsafe in May 2012. For ten years, she was the Passport Administrator dealing with the latter stages of the production and administration of McDonalds Contractors Passports, as well as assisting with the day-to-day office tasks. Michelle began her new role in May 2022 assisting with the consultancy administration, preparing documents and liaising with clients. In her spare time, she enjoys looking after her menagerie of animals, gardening and sewing. Michelle also owns a haberdashery shop, running numerous craft workshops.
